You have thought and heard, countless times, that motherhood is a thankless, underpaid job, right? Well, I hate to say it, but so being a business owner. I learned the hard way that starting my own business wasn’t all about coffee dates with girlfriends or a large boost in my income. But, like being a Mom, I just jumped right in, learned every day, and worked hard at being good at it. 10 Reasons Moms make great business owners

So should you.

10 Reasons Moms make great business owners. photo of a woman and baby at a desk.

With no explanation needed for each item on the list, here are ten underestimated reasons why moms make the best business owners.

  1. They are great at uniting people.
  2. Moms have mastered the art of event planning.
  3. Natural leadership instincts.
  4. Amazing negotiators.
  5. Multitaskers – if you can call it that.
  6. Strong problem solvers.
  7. They have the ability to meet urgent deadlines.
  8. They are always asking a lot of questions.
  9. Know how to deliver bad news gently.
  10. Moms understand the importance of planning ahead.

These are just TEN reasons why moms make amazing business owners. This list could have easily been the top 100 reasons but that would defeat the purpose. My goal, for this article, is to help you realize why you will make a great business owner.

If you are still unsure, read this article on why starting your own business is a good idea.

Define your own success. If I can, so can you.

Are you able to define your own success? For the longest time, I wasn’t. I am talking years, of feeling that I was not successful. Even though my business was booking 50+ weddings a year, family portraits, commercial work, corporate events… the list goes on and on. I was shooting as often as I wanted, editing and providing product and value to my clients. Every. Single. Day.

Yet, in my head, I was not successful. I could not put my finger on why I felt that way, I was doing what I loved and loved doing it! It wasn’t until I burned out that I realized what it was. I didn’t have anything to measure my success with. I had goals, yes but they were broad, vague and seemed to always be in the distant future.

At my wit’s end, I sat down and decided it was time to define what success meant to me, not to everyone else. I mean, specific goals aside, what EXACTLY did it mean?

So, I did what any reasonable person looking for answers did. I googled it.
What did I find? I learned the definition of success is:

‘the accomplishment of an aim or purpose’

That sure hit me like a hammer! I looked at my monitor and said, out loud, “So setting a goal and accomplishing it is the meaning of success? No, too easy!” I had to dig deep to define my version of success. Getting it in my head that it is not what my family and friends think or even my industry collogues or leaders think, but MY definition of success. It was vital that I stopped comparing myself to others in the industry and realize their success has no bearing on my own.

define your own success and build a life your proud of

I took a few days to reflect and truly work out precisely what it is I needed to feel fulfilled and know what success meant to me. I realized I wanted to spend as much time with my family as possible.  As well as continue to build my businesses and inspiring other women, like me, to follow their path. I needed to know that I was making a positive impact on the business world and genuinely making a difference. Finally, I wanted to be able to go to Starbucks or out for dinner whenever I felt like it without needing to see if I could afford it and have a Broadway Across Canada subscription. Very clear, very specific and very attainable.

So now, I work from home running two businesses, I help hundreds of women run their businesses and have the freedom to enjoy that latte whenever I want AND I have my subscription! Les Misérables in July! BAM!

For me, that’s success. For others, maybe not.

I guess what I am trying to say is, I changed my perspective on success and you can too. By no longer viewing what was perceived as success through the “glazed over” look of thinking I needed more, I was able to dig deep within myself and figure out what success meant for me.  Which made it that much easier to achieve.

The ONE Thing by Gary Keller

I just started reading The ONE Thing, by Gary Keller and I am learning that it is a must read for every entrepreneur.  I haven’t finished reading the book, yet, but I wanted to share something that has already changed my perspective.

In the book, it states:

“The problem is we tend to act on what we believe even when what we believe isn’t anything we should”.

We all have beliefs that just aren’t true, but we truly believe them to be. Yet; there are six very specific ones, stated in this book, that truly hold us back from our success. We tell ourselves these lies so often to make decisions,  that they eventually become our truth.

6 lies that we keep telling ourselfOnce you learn that the above “truths” are in fact lies, you can focus on the truth and start moving toward your success. Which according to Gary Keller it comes down to:

“being appropriate in the moments of your life. If you can honestly say, “This is where I’m meant to be right now, doing exactly what I’m doing,” then all the amazing possibilities for your life become possible.”

3 Ways to Empower Your Entrepreneurial Mind

An empowered woman walks through the world with confidence and grace. She pursues excellence in all aspects of life and does not settle. She has a clear vision of her dreams and is fearless in making them a reality.

We are all capable of being empowered women, women who build amazing businesses and achieve our own vision of success. The thing is, for most of us, this doesn’t come naturally and we need to make conscious decisions to be in an empowered and entrepreneurial mindset at all times, which, is not always easy.

Our mindset plays a big role in determining our success, in both business and in life. So, if we want to be empowered, achieve success, we have to do it on purpose.

To help you along your journey, below are three things you can do to help you get into the entrepreneurial mindset.

Be a risk-taker.

Entrepreneurship is all about risk-taking. To truly be empowered and reach higher levels of success, you absolutely need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. There is no direct path to success and you know as well as I do, that there is no certainty of it.

Creating your dream life and starting your own business means betting on yourself and not looking back. Taking risks that both scare and excite you is usually a sign that you are on the right path. Learning to love this discomfort will take you much further than any safe feeling ever will.

Take risks if you win, you will be happy. If you lose, you will be wise. Empower Your Entrepreneurial Mind

Redefine your definition of success.

The definition of success is ‘the accomplishment of an aim or purpose’. I know many people in the entrepreneur space that define success as a monetary amount, yes this financial success is important, being driven by money will not help you succeed. This way of measurement will burn you out faster than you could imagine. Define your success by the people you help and the progress you make in your business, not by comparing yourself to the success of others or how much money is in your account.

When you define your success this way, it will ensure your accomplishments are much more satisfying and reinforce your mindset that you are heading in the right direction. Not to mention, what may seem like failures will be viewed more as learning opportunities that help you to be more empowered in your business and a successful entrepreneur in the long run. Empower Your Entrepreneurial Mind

Celebrate Every Little Win.

When you take time to celebrate every success, big or small, it will build your confidence and will help you take it to the next level to reach those large-scale goals. Not to mention, a celebration will give you closure on the goals you’ve been working hard toward. So, when you hit that publish button, empty your inbox, call a client, any accomplishment, stand up and do a little dance! Give yourself the credit you deserve for the time, effort and energy you are putting into your business. Keep the momentum going and make every success a celebration.

the virtual studio says to celebrate how far you've come today.

Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations

I belive that one of the most valuable gifts you can give yourself is time. Taking time to be more fully present. ~ Oprah Winfrey

Just under a year ago, the crazy successful TV series from Oprah Winfrey, Super Soul Sundays, was converted a podcast. Oprah talks with a fascinating selection of writers, philosophers, spiritual leaders, and celebrities about discovery, growth, life, experiences and so much more. It is designed to motivate you, guide you through life’s biggest struggles and help bring you one step closer to your best self.

I don’t have cable tv, haven’t for many many years, so I didn’t even know that Supersoul Sunday even existed until I came across the podcast! And I am so glad I did, listening to each episode has been very inspirational and motivating. The conversations are always along the theme of conscious living, self-discovery and how to live a fulfilling life.

Subscribe, listen, breath it all in and begin your journey!

Do you listen to podcasts? Share your favourites below or in the Facebook group, I’d love to find more to listen too!
