Work/Life Management

How to come alive and follow your passion.

How to come alive and follow your passion.

Sometimes, does life feel a little bit like you’re just trying to survive? After you come home from work every day, you are feeling tired and listless wanting only to lie on the couch but it’s time to make dinner, help with homework, bath time, bedtime, prep for tomorrow, then you can rest.

Finally, a chance to rest, but you don’t feel very rested or rewarded because ultimately rest normally just means staring at the TV for an hour before bed and that’s hardly rewarding!

So what do you do instead? How do you make yourself ‘come alive again’? Simple: you re-engage with your passions.

How to come alive and follow your passion. Billy Cox Quote about doing what you loveHow to come alive and follow your passion.

We All Have Dreams

All of us have dreams and passions. At some point, these dreams and ambitions are what put you on the path you’re on now. Perhaps your aim was to work that job just long enough to earn the money you need to fund your dream. Or perhaps you’re working because you found a partner you loved and you were willing to postpone your ambitions for them.

Neither of these attitudes is wrong but if you have lost sight of why you started putting in the time and work in the first place, then something has gone wrong. If you’ve lost a reason to work, then you will just be listless and cruising through life.

So what do you do? You reignite those passions and you chase after them again!

Ask yourself:

  • Why is it that you do what you do?
  • Where do you see yourself in three years?
  • What are your beliefs and your values?
  • What were the things that gave you direction when you were a young teenager?
  • And, finally, how can you get yourself back on track?

The problem is that many of us feel that our passions are silly,  childish, or even irresponsible. So, what do we do? We end up burying them for more respectable aims like ‘being area manager’. But who said that being an area manager of a corporation was more respectable than being an activist or an artist?

A few things you can do to feel alive again would be

  • Say something you’ve been meaning to say.
  • Try something you’ve always wanted to try.
  • Sign up for a class you’ve always found intriguing.
  • Do something you never thought possible.

The point is that you don’t have to give up your job or your responsibilities. You just have to keep the burning passion alive so that you’re pursuing it when you can. When you do this and you remember the ‘why’, then life will have meaning and direction again.

Home Business or Work-at-Home Job – Which Is Right for You?

With the 2020 pandemic rocking the world in ways, no one saw coming – more and more people are working from home. Either with their home business or work-at-home job. Some people started a business or the 9-5 corporations started having the work from home option now available.

Now, many don’t want to go back to the corporate cubicle or have always wanted to work from home for a variety of reasons. Maybe you just had a child and want more work-life balance, or perhaps you have an illness that makes it difficult for you to get out of the house. Or maybe you just like being home and want the freedom to work your way.

Whatever the reasons you want to work at home, you’ll need to choose whether or not you want a job from home, or you want a business from home. Here are eight questions to help you decide.

Are You Self-Motivated?

If you want your own business so that you can set your hours, you will need to be very self-motivated. You’ll need to take time out of your day for marketing, interviewing clients, closing the deal and then doing the work too. You’ll be 100 percent responsible for delivering the work, billing and collecting. You’ll even be responsible for deciding the methods you’ll use to do the work. To do that you’ll need to be a very self-motivated individual.

What Skills Do You Have?

Take a piece of paper and write down a list of the skills you currently have, based on what you’ve already done in the past. Can any of these translate into a business? Label them appropriately. Do any of these translate into common work-from-home positions such as call center agent or transcriptionist? Some skills cross over into both, but which side of the list gets full faster?

What Sort of Lifestyle Do You Want?

With a work-at-home job, you’ll be required to “show up” for work on time each day that you’re scheduled, and you may have little control over that schedule. What’s more, with work-at-home positions it’s a lot harder than typical jobs to call in sick, whether it’s you or a child who is sick. Often the first 90 days you cannot miss your schedule at all if you want to keep the position. Are you ready for that? Or, would you prefer a more family-oriented type of schedule that can be adjusted more easily and is more deliverables-based than hourly-based?

Do You Already Have a Business Idea?

If you have already researched a business idea, and feel as if you want to do that instead of working for someone else, can you pull it off? What steps do you need to take to make it a reality? Are you the type of person to be able to organize and take the steps needed to get your business off the ground? Can you find and afford help if you’re not sure what to do to get the business going? Does the thought of all this stress you out?

[insert page=’i2i-playbook-2′ display=’content’]

How Do You Feel about Punching a Clock?

For some people the idea of clock-punching is relaxing, for others it feels like a nightmare. Neither feeling is right or wrong as it takes all types of people to make this world work. If you know upfront that you are fine with punching a clock and you’d rather someone else tell you when to be someplace and what to do, then a work-at-home job is best for you. If that feels like a prison to you, then a business is probably better if you can do what it takes to get it going.

Do You Have Money to Start a Business?

Starting any type of business, even an online business, requires an investment not only of time but also of money. Have you worked out a business plan and do you know how much money you need to get started? Do you have that money available? If not, do you have a way to get it? Perhaps working at a job first, while you save for and work on your business on the side, is the way to go if you don’t have the funds to start.

Do You Need Training and Education?

Both working at a job and owning a business sometimes require skills that you don’t have yet. But that’s okay. Decide if you want to invest in the training yourself to get your business off the ground, or if you would like to try to find a work-at-home job where they will train you from the ground up even if you have little experience and due to that the pay may be low.

What Is Your Biggest Dream for Your Life?

When you think of the future, what do you see? Does it sound relaxing to get up in the morning, have some breakfast, and move to your home office where you sign in to work at your job, taking a break when needed by telling your manager that you have to use the restroom, or go eat lunch and so forth, then when you get off work you’re totally and fully off? Plus, each week you collect a certain paycheck?

Or, do you like the idea of being able to do what you want when you want (and likely working more hours than you ever thought you could) without the surety of income each week, but knowing you’re forging your future?

Whatever you decide, neither is right or wrong. They are both good choices for you. Whether you want a work-at-home job so you can sign off after the day and focus 100 percent on your family, or whether you want a business that will cross boundaries into family time and vice versa but that puts you 100 percent in charge – both are good choices and choices that you are fortunate to have in this age of high-speed internet.

If you don’t want to hire help, you will definitely have some special challenges. But, it’s not impossible. In fact here are the top ten home business ideas for you that don’t require clock punching, or answering to anyone but yourself.

Stock Photographer

Stock photography is used in numerous applications, from websites and blogs to print ads. The demand is quite high for good and unique photographs to use for these reasons. Therefore, most stock photography companies allow independent contractors to upload pictures for sale on their websites. You can also start your own website offering the images for use.

Graphic Designer

Designers are needed everywhere; the demand is high. If you’re good with using creative software to make webpages, advertisements, banners, book covers (eBook and paper) and more, you can work for many companies at the same time performing these services. While it’s deadline based, you can still work at 3 am if you need to.

Freelance Writer

As a freelance writer, there are many different opportunities today based on your skill level. You can write for so-called content mills, individuals looking for writers, as a copywriter writing specific sales copy, or you can write for yourself and publish your own books as PDFs or via Kindle Direct Publishing.

Arts and Craft Seller

If you’re artsy and like creating art, you can do more than just create. You can sell, and you can make bank. Sites like Etsy.com, DeviantArt.com, and Art.com make it easy for individuals to upload pictures of their work to sell. You are responsible for shipping it on time, and you’ll give a percentage of sales to the website you list on. You can also start your own website but usually, you’ll make sales faster working through an established and trusted venue. Top Ten Home Business Ideas for Parents

Amazon Seller

Fulfillment by Amazon has started a trend in individuals selling both new and used merchandise through their service. Learning how to sell on Amazon can take a little time but there are people who are making six-plus figures doing it, and you can too. This is something you can do on your own time, with your children in tow.

eBay Seller

Yes, eBay is still around, selling on eBay is a little harder than the other choices, but many people do it successfully as a full-time job. If you have access to the right products, you can do it too. Again, this is something you can do on your own time. The only thing that might take a lot of work on your part is packing and shipping.

Lifestyle Blogger

You’ve likely seen the movie, “Julie & Julia” right? Well, Julie started out as just another blogger, blogging about her adventures cooking from Julia Child’s cookbook. She became very popular, sold the rights to her story, and a movie was made. She made money off the deal, of course. Today, bloggers blog about all sorts of things and earn money through advertising, affiliate marketing, and product promotions. You can, too.

Herb Gardner

This work-at-home business takes a little time and work, but it’s healthy, the children can help, and you can make about 60K a year from your back yard if it’s allowed in your area. You can sell at farmers’ markets but you can also sell directly to restaurants if you plan and market right.

Virtual Assistant

If you’re detail-oriented and like to work at your computer, the life of a virtual assistant might be for you. Don’t want to be tied to one office or person all day, every day? Consider becoming a virtual assistant, which allows you a more flexible work environment.

Social Media Manager

If you love social media, consider starting a social media management business. You’ll be paid to hag out on your favourite platforms, all day!  It doesn’t require a large investment or special equipment to get started, especially if you already have a computer and internet service.

Working from home is often a parent’s dream. They can be near their kids, not have to work by someone else’s clock, and still, earn enough money to not only pay for needed items but vacations, dream cars, and more.

It might be time for you to consider starting your own business. I know it was the best decision I ever made for me and my family! If you are unsure where to start, take a peek at the Studio’s resource page, there is plenty there to help you get started today.

Tell me, if you could start your own business TODAY – with nothing stopping you, what business would you launch?

I’d love to hear from you, tell me in the comments or join us over in the Studio Workshop, my free Facebook group for women in business!

Are You Using Blog Drafts To Get Ahead?

Are You Using Blog Drafts To Get Ahead?
I have a quick tip for you today that will come in handy as you’re working on getting ahead on your blogging. It’s using the draft feature. Yes, it’s handy that WordPress and most other blogging platforms have a way to save your posts as drafts so you can continue to work on it over the course of a few days. It’s even better that they usually auto-save for you – at least it is in my case. But there’s another great way to use the draft feature.

You can use drafts to get ahead of the blogging game in several different ways.

Let’s start with the most obvious one.

woman working at her laptop starting a business, Using blog Drafts

Use Drafts to Work on Your Next Blog Post (or Two)

The most obvious way to use drafts is, of course, to work on your current blog post until it is ready to publish. But don’t just stop there. If you know you have a busy day tomorrow or later on in the week, go ahead and give yourself a head start by creating a draft and working on it here and there as you can fit it in your busy day. You’ll be glad you did when it comes time to wrap up that particular post.

Use Drafts to Plan Out Your Week

You can also use drafts to plan out your blogging for the week. Let’s say you want to post 5 times per week. Come up with 5 topics and create a draft for each. Then start working on them, making sure you wrap up and publish at least one of the posts on each of your publishing days.

Not only will this keep you on track and show you at a glance what you’ll be blogging about this week, but it also allows you to work on multiple posts throughout the week, giving you options when you get stuck on writing one post.

Use Drafts as A Way of Storing Blog Post Ideas

Let’s wrap this up with my favourite way to use the draft feature. And that’s to use it as a storage container for ideas for future blog posts. Here’s how to do it. When you get an idea for a blog post, go ahead and create a draft. Come up with a working title and make a quick note of what your blog post will be about. If you’re feeling ambitious, go ahead and write a quick outline for the post. Then save it as a draft.

To be honest, I have over 75 drafts sitting in my post calendar! Some are just titles, some are full blow written blogs that just need to be formatted. This makes it super easy when I am “not in the mood” to write, I can choose one, format, and publish.

Do this anytime you come up with an idea and save them for later. Then whenever you need something to blog about, browse through your drafts and pick one of these.
The idea is there and you may even have done some of the writing already. These drafts make for fast blog posts and are just the thing when you’re suffering from writer’s block.

Also, if you haven’t already, be sure to read 52 Blog Ideas for your business, who couldn’t use 52 blog ideas? Or just head straight to the Classroom to download the PDF!

Now, hop into the Studio Workshop and let us know, have you always been a drafter?

Recognize Business Burnout & Recover, before it’s too late.

Recognize Business Burnout
Whether you are an entrepreneur, online or off, a full-time employee building your career, or both, it typically means working more hours than you want, at the start of your new career, as you build your personal or business brand… but what if you’re still working all those extra hours, two, three, or more years later?

That’s when business burnout really strikes.

You’ve heard the term, I’m sure, many times. So, what exactly is it, and why does it happen?

Burnout is defined as physical and emotional exhaustion that takes all the joy out of your business and saps away your ability to be proactive and engaged. In that way, it lies dangerously parallel to depression. It can manifest any time in your career, whenever two conditions creep into your work life: Stress, and the feeling that your business is controlling you, rather than the other way round.

I’ve been there, it isn’t pretty and it is an easy spiral down that is very hard to climb out of. I do not want to see anyone go through it – ever.

The moment you have burnout creeping in, the stress you are already feeling tends to magnify. Warning signs include:Recognizing business burnout isn't easy, and we usually see it when it is too late. Download 21 Ways to Take Action and learn how to recognize business burnout sooner rather than later.

  • No longer feeling energized by working long hours
  • Frustration with your inability to accomplish tasks that were once easy
  • Not wanting to come to work (or sit down at your computer)
  • Feeling angry with yourself at not accomplishing more
  • Procrastination and avoidance behaviours
  • A decline in self-worth and self-esteem
  • Resenting clients and customers
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Feeling hopeless

Above all, burnout is characterized by physical and emotional exhaustion. It takes a toll on your family relationships, your health, and your business … and makes a mockery of your freedom-based purpose of going into business for yourself.

In the end, each entrepreneur’s ideal recipe for reducing stress and ending burnout is different. Be sure to download the 21 Ways to Take Action –  Recognize and Heal From Business Burnout.

Or take further action by signing up for my How to Recognize and Heal From Business Burnout, available in the classroom.  If you would like to learn more about the masterclass, take a peek at the course page, here.

Starting an Online Business: How to Set Clear Goals

Starting an Online Business:
If you are starting an online business, you are joining the ranks of hundreds of thousands of others. There are many tasks to achieve when it comes to your online business. One of the most important and perhaps the most beneficial ways to achieve success is to set clear goals for that business.

There are several ways on how to go about setting clear goals. For many individuals, their goals are so broad that success is something that never happens. However, you can learn to rely on your set of goals to achieve success if you set them up correctly.

Successful Business Woman's Desk with a cup of espresso and a quote from Henry David Thoreau Starting an Online Business

How to Set Clear Goals for Your Online Business

1. Be specific

When you set a goal, it is imperative that you be specific about that goal. Simply stating that you want to reach a specific target audience or to make money is not a specific goal. A specific goal would be something like “I want to gain 100 more likes on Facebook in the next three months.” Or, “I want to make an additional $5,000.00 in the next three months.” Goals need to be specific to be successful.

2. Write everything down

No matter how trivial you may think it may sound, it is imperative to write everything down on your action plan. Without writing it down, it is as though you are not declaring it to the world.

3. Break it down

Break down your goals into sub-goals. It is as though you are choosing a niche and then choosing a sub-niche. For example, if your niche is women over forty, perhaps you could break that down even further to make it divorced women over forty. Break it down and be specific.

Breaking down your goals makes them easier to reach. If you have a goal to gain three more clients in the next six months, break it down on how you plan to reach that goal. For example, “I will guest blog on other sites” or “I will join LinkedIn and promote my business.” However, you want to do it, make sure to break it down precisely.

4. Put a timeline to your goal

Giving yourself a deadline to achieve a goal is probably the best thing you can ever do for yourself. You are accountable to yourself and your business partners by attaching a timeline to your goals. By doing this, you put a little pressure on yourself to achieve that goal by or before the set time.

5. Be accountable

Being accountable to yourself and someone in your new business is an excellent way to make, keep, and achieve goals. Giving your word is a powerful tool not only reaching but also in exceeding clear and specific goals.

When your goals are specific and clear, success is just a stone’s throw away.

Do You Have a Business or a Hobby?

Do You Have a Business or a Hobby
I see it all the time, someone has made the decision to start their own business, so they build a website, start selling their product, and jump right in! It is excellent, it is brave, it isn’t always the right thing. Online business owners can easily “open their doors for business” without a firm business plan in place. Some may test the waters to see if they attract any clients and some start out doing this online work as a side gig while working their full-time job.

If this is how you opened your business and now you are in elbows deep, are you able to tell if you have a business or if it is still just a hobby?

My first business started as a hobby, I loved taking photos of my kids. A hobby traditionally is an activity that pleases you and you do in your spare time. A business, on the other hand, provides a service or products to clients, has business hours, and strives to make a profit.

Do You Have a Business or a Hobby A woman's suitcase packed with a camera and a laptop ready to blog about her travels, and the quote " Every creative person's dream is a hobby they're lucky enough to get paid for." Do You Have a Business or a Hobby

Here are some questions to ask yourself to determine if you are working a business or a hobby:

  • Do you have firm business hours or are you working sporadic hours as your family or full-time job allows?
  • Do you make the most of your business hours or work time, working as efficiently as possible, or do you get distracted by social media or other behind-the-scenes tasks?
  • Do you have a business plan, even for one year, which includes expected profits?
  • Do you make opportunities happen or do you wait for them to come to you?
  • Do you withdraw every penny from your account after clients pay or do you give yourself a pay structure and reinvest some of your profits into software, training, or other business expenses?

If you were unsure before, you should have an idea now about if your business is indeed a business.

Hire a Business Coach to Guide You

You don’t need a business degree to start a business; sometimes a unique product idea or a strong desire to offer services is enough to get started. Hiring a business coach or mentor will be helpful. They will assist you in setting up your company to grow and generate profits. You don’t know what you don’t know. Without a business coach, you will make a lot of trial and error mistakes, some of which could cost you substantial amounts of money. I know this from experience. Instead of closing your eyes and hoping for the best, work with a coach to create a business plan. They will help guide you through the next steps. A good coach will be able to help you and provide tried and true business advice and strategies.

Also, your business coach will also serve as your accountability partner. Someone who wants to hear from you about your progress and who will call you out when you don’t do as you promised. Often knowing someone is expecting results is enough to spur people into action because they don’t want to let down the coach.

If you’re ready to work with a business coach and ready to turn that hobby into a business, I’ve got some openings in my calendar for new clients so reach out to me to book your discovery call.

3 Proven Ways to Market Your New Business

The world is filled with great ideas and broke business owners with fabulous products but no sales. Trust me. So here are 3 Ways to Market Your New Business.

The fact is, ideas are not what drives most business success. Marketing does. So before you quit your day job to branch out on your own, it pays to have a solid marketing plan in place. Start with these 3 ideas to get your creative juices flowing.3 Ways to Market Your New Business. Seth Godin Quote

Free Webinars

For information product sellers, coaches, and service providers, one of the best sources of new clients is in free training webinars. No matter what your niche, the promise of in-depth training at no cost is enough to entice potential clients to part with an email address (which you’ll be able to market to later) and an hour of their time.

Not only that, but webinars are a fantastic way for those potential customers to get to know you better. And the better they know you, the more likely they are to buy.

Content Marketing

Not comfortable hosting a webinar? Hit the keyboard and start sharing your thoughts and ideas via your blog, ebooks, guest articles and other written content. For internet marketers, this gives readers a taste of what they can expect from your product. If you sell physical products, it provides the perfect opportunity to share useful tips and other important information with your buyers.

Of course, there’s another important benefit to content marketing, too: search engine optimization. Google and other search engines index the words on your website and use the information to present search results to their users. Content marketing is a tool you can use to make the most of these results and to bring more potential buyers to your website.

Paid Advertising

Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google and plenty of other sites all offer paid placement, and with today’s powerful analytics tools, it’s easy to create ads and drive traffic inexpensively. Consider starting with Facebook, since the cost is low and it’s easy to target your ads to your ideal client. Once you’ve perfected your funnel, you can branch out into more costly ads with a larger reach, such as Google AdWords or another ad network.

Don’t limit yourself to these three marketing methods though. There are dozens of others you can try, including affiliate programs, JV partnerships, automated funnels, direct mail campaigns, and even television advertising. The key is to keep testing and tweaking to make the most of every marketing effort so that your business continues to grow.

6 Reasons to Give Clean Eating a Try

Clean eating comes with a whole load of health benefits that will help you change your life for the better. Not to mention, how it will improve your chances for business success because of how it changes the way you feel. When you start eating clean, you make a decision to enjoy a longer healthier life, free from common ailments caused by garbage found in most processed foods. On the other hand, filling your fridge with organic produce isn’t expensive at all.

However, what is it about clean eating that makes it so important, and why should anyone start eating clean? Here are ten reasons why you should join this growing health trend and start eating clean.

benefits to clean eating

You become more mindful

So many people eat in response to their cravings and appetite, but very few actually make the decision to eat consciously by selecting certain foods and ditching others. When it comes to clean eating, this is not the case. You will have to be mindful of what you decide to eat. There are so many processed foods that are man-made, unnatural and unhealthy. If you decide to eat clean, you will opt for natural foods that are not refined or processed. This makes you more aware of your food choices and therefore ensures improvement in your eating habits.

Improves your concentration

Do you want to stay sharp and focused? You might consider eating more whole foods and avoid too much sugar. Eating processed foods has been associated with feeling foggy and unfocused because of high blood sugar which also reduces your memory. Avoid anything sugary such as bottled salad dressing or your favourite piece of cake.

You become more energized

Most clean foods such as fruits are guaranteed sources of instant energy whenever you feel weak or lacking energy. If you eat fruits for the afternoon, you are likely to overcome the afternoon slump and grogginess since high fibre fruits provide critical vitamins to keep you alert and energized.

Saves you cents

One of the perks of eating clean foods is that you will be able to save more inadvertently. You will not fall sick often and therefore you can scrape away medical bills and use the money elsewhere. It is cost-effective and you will be able to shop locally, being mindful of your budget and expenses. This reduces unnecessary use of money in buying spices, sugars and other refined, processed cost, so you save from all sides.

You will sleep better

Sleep is part of the business of staying healthy, and eating the right things has a direct bearing on the quality of sleep that you get. If you want to sleep soundly, take out the caffeine, juices and replace them with evening fruits and salads. Sleep is vitally important for your health, so eat mindfully for better sleep.

Better mood and stronger body

Do you want to feel revitalized and energized all day long? Studies have shown that people who eat less sugar are more likely to be happy and in a good mood as compared to their opposite counterparts. Eating clean has a direct relation to having a better mood and a stronger body that is immune to diseases.
